Assessment

 

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. It provides valuable information about what students know, understand and can do, and helps teachers make informed decisions about next steps in learning. Assessment supports the ongoing monitoring of student progress and achievement and enables teachers to provide timely feedback that improves learning.

 

At our school, assessment is purposeful, meaningful and aligned to syllabus outcomes. Teachers use a range of assessment approaches to gather evidence of student learning across all Key Learning Areas.

Assessment includes both formative and summative assessment:

​

 

• Formative assessment occurs throughout the learning process and is used to monitor student understanding, provide feedback and inform future teaching. Examples may include classroom discussions, observations, work samples, quizzes, exit tickets and teacher feedback.
   

• Summative assessment occurs at specific points in time and provides evidence of what students know, understand and can do in relation to syllabus outcomes. Examples may include projects, performances, investigations and assessment tasks

 

Reporting

 

Reporting is an important part of the learning partnership between school and home. It provides parents and carers with information about their child's progress and achievement, based on evidence gathered through ongoing assessment.

Students receive written reports at the end of Terms 2 and 4. These reports provide information about each student's achievement and progress in relation to the learning that has been taught and assessed during the reporting period.

Parent-teacher interviews are held following the distribution of reports and provide an opportunity to discuss student progress, celebrate achievements and identify future learning goals.

In addition to formal reporting periods, teachers communicate regularly with students and families throughout the year to share information about learning, progress and achievement.
